Classic lasagne Budapest – Matteo's Italian Classics, Rákóczi tér Market Hall

Why is good lasagne so hard to find in Budapest?

Budapest has no shortage of Italian restaurants — but finding genuine, properly made lasagne is harder than it sounds. Most places serve pizza and pasta as their main focus, while lasagne ends up as an afterthought: dry, pre-made, or missing that slow- cooked depth that makes it worth ordering.

Matteo's Italian Classics was built around exactly this gap. No pizza, no fusion twists. Lasagne is the star — everything else is built around it.

300 portions a day — how is that possible?

The team at Matteo's works in three shifts, around the clock, so that every portion is freshly baked each morning. Nothing sits from the day before — what doesn't sell doesn't come back.

The system is simple but effective: freshly baked lasagne is blast-chilled to lock in texture and flavour. When you order, your portion goes straight into a hot oven for a few minutes — the result is indistinguishable from something pulled fresh from the oven. This is not a shortcut; it's the only way to maintain this quality at this volume.

As We Love Budapest put it: thanks to the steady flow of customers, most portions don't wait long at all. Come at lunch and your lasagne is practically guaranteed to be freshly baked.

The 5 lasagne varieties — which one is yours?

Five lasagne varieties on the menu, each with its own character and inspiration from different corners of Italy.

Classic Lasagne

2 890 HUF

Slow-cooked meat ragù, creamy béchamel, generous cheese. The one Italian mothers and grandmothers argue over who makes better. Start here if it's your first visit.

Spinach & Ricotta Lasagne

2 890 HUF

The vegetarian option that stands on its own merits. Soft ricotta, fresh spinach, silky béchamel — light but deeply satisfying.

Sausage, Mushroom & Truffle Cream Lasagne

3 290 HUF

Matteo's grandmother's recipe. Italian salsiccia, porcini mushrooms, truffle cream and a rich tomato base — deeply flavoured, a winter favourite.

Artichoke, Smoked Provola & Pecorino Lasagne

2 990 HUF

Italian cheese culture at its best. The smokiness of provola and the sharpness of pecorino meet artichoke in a Southern Italian flavour profile.

Duck Ragù Lasagne

3 890 HUF

The most refined dish on the menu. Slowly braised duck ragù, deeply caramelised — this is the one people come back for.

Italian ingredients — why it matters

Authentic Italian flavours can't be faked. The salsiccia behaves differently in a ragù than any other sausage — different fat content, different spicing, different texture. Pecorino and smoked provola are not interchangeable with local substitutes when an Italian flavour profile is the goal.

This is why Matteo imports sausage, cheese and olive oil from Italy. Fresh vegetables — carrots, onion, seasonal tomatoes — come from Hungarian producers. As Matteo puts it: summer Hungarian tomatoes are exceptional, there's no point importing them. In winter, premium Italian tinned tomatoes do the job better. It's not compromise — it's knowing when local is better.

Lasagne in Budapest District VIII — worth the trip

District VIII has transformed significantly in recent years — from one of Budapest's most overlooked neighbourhoods to one of its most interesting. Rákóczi tér is at the centre of that change. Matteo's fits naturally into this story: a place that takes quality seriously without taking itself too seriously.

If you're looking for the best lasagne in Budapest — not the trendiest place, not the most expensive, but the one where they genuinely know how to cook — Matteo's is the answer.

Frequently asked questions

Yes, the Spinach & Ricotta Lasagne is meat-free, made with fresh ricotta and creamy béchamel.

Can I take it away and reheat at home?

Absolutely. Portions are packed in three-layer, oil-resistant, recyclable containers suitable for both oven and microwave reheating.

Which is the most expensive lasagne?

The Duck Ragù Lasagne at 3,890 HUF is the most premium option — slowly braised duck with a deeply caramelised sauce.

Is Matteo's available on Wolt?

Yes, you can order for delivery across Budapest through Wolt.

Not a franchise. Famiglia.

Matteo puts it simply: I don't want a franchise, I want a family. Every dish must taste the same, because people come back for the flavour — and if it's different, they're disappointed. Every morning he personally tastes what his team prepared the night before. Not as a control measure — as a ritual.

That's the attitude you can taste in the first bite.
